Sport is heavily influenced in North Korea as the government tells them that "a healthy body is the gem of the country". Sport is encouraged from as young as primary school as many North Korean men join the army straight after secondary school. The most popular sports in North Korea include football, Taekwondo, boxing and track and field. There is more emphasis with sports that have something to do with the military.
In North Korea, bringing back a gold medal from a sport is seen as a great thing, the athlete is referred to as an "honorable athlete" or "peoples athlete", the government showers them with gifts like nice cars and big houses.
